Earwax Removal

Earwax, medically known as cerumen, is your ear’s natural defence mechanism. It helps protect the ear canal by trapping dust, bacteria, and small particles. Normally, the ear is self-cleaning, and wax naturally moves outward. However, in some cases, earwax can build up and become impacted, leading to discomfort or hearing problems.

What is Earwax Removal?

Earwax removal is the process of clearing excess or impacted cerumen from the ear canal when it begins to cause symptoms. At Surrey Hearing Care, trained professionals safely remove earwax using clinically approved methods.

Our Removal Methods

We use safe and effective techniques depending on your ear condition:

  • Irrigation (Syringing)
A gentle stream of warm water or saline is used to flush the wax from the ear canal.
  • Manual Removal
Specialized instruments such as curettes, loops, hooks, and forceps are used to carefully remove wax without water or suction.

Preparing for Earwax Removal

Earwax can harden over time. Using oil softens the wax, making removal easier and more comfortable. We recommend applying oil for 3–5 days before your appointment.

What Oil Should You Use?

  • Olive Oil or Mineral Oil – Available at most grocery stores or pharmacies
  • ProEar ($20) – A specialized clinical oil for cerumen management with a precision dropper, available at Surrey Hearing Care

How to Apply Ear Drops

  1. Use room-temperature oil (cold oil may cause temporary dizziness).
  2. Lie on your side with the affected ear facing upward.
  3. Apply 3–5 drops into the ear canal.
  4. Remain lying down for 10 minutes to allow the oil to absorb into the wax.
  5. Repeat on the other ear if needed.

What to Expect

  • Temporary muffled hearing: This is normal as the wax softens and expands.
  • Stop use if needed: If you experience sharp pain, stinging, or discharge, stop using the drops and contact our clinic.

Pricing

Assessment and Removal Fee: $100

This fee covers the clinician’s time and professional assessment. The cost is the same whether removal is needed in one ear or both.

No Wax Policy

If the clinician examines your ears and finds that wax removal is not necessary, you may choose to apply this fee toward a comprehensive hearing test. If you decide not to proceed with a hearing test, the charge will be reduced to a $50 service fee.
